Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force/General Membership Meeting

We hope you will be able to join us for our next virtual combination Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force/General Membership Meeting, which is on Wednesday, April 27th at 1:00pm. We have two fantastic guest speakers this month. Kimberly A Badanich, Ph.D., Incredi-Bull Critical Thinking Faculty Member, Department of Psychology, USF will present on “Alcohol and Cocaine’s Effects on Behavior and the Brain”. Dr. Badanich is a Ph.D. graduate of the University of South Florida in Behavioral Neuroscience and Post Doc in Neuroscience at Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, where she was a Post-Doctoral Fellow from 2008 – 2012. Doug Simon, Director of the Office of Drug Control, Office of Policy & Budget – Florida Governor’s Office of Drug Control will address the group and answer any questions. Mr. Simon was also Director of State and Local Affairs and White House Liaison at the Office of National Drug Control Policy from 2006 – 2009.

Community Resilience and Recovery Initiative Listening Session

Drug Free Manatee has embarked on a Community Resilience and Recovery Initiative for our community. We invite you to join the conversation during our scheduled Community Listening Sessions on one or all of the following dates: April 28th in Bradenton, May 4th in Palmetto, and/or May 19th in Oneco. These meetings will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will last approximately one (1) hour. Specific locations are listed on the flyer. These collaborative and transparent sessions welcome and encourage every citizen to step up and make their voice heard. Getting the message out is paramount to the success of these listening sessions, therefore we at Drug Free Manatee would appreciate all efforts to spread the word and fill the rooms! DEA National Take Back Day

April 30th is DEA National Take Back Day and here in Hillsborough County there will be 7 locations for citizens to drop off unwanted/unused prescription drugs between 10:00am and 2:00pm. Virtual Tobacco Cessation Class (Group Quit Session)

AdventHealth Carrollwood is partnering with GulfCoast North AHEC again for a free, virtual Tobacco Cessation Class (Group Quit Session)! The virtual class is Monday, May 2 from 6:00 – 8:00PM. PedalforPrevention2022-flyer-final Pasco Alliance for Substance Addiction Prevention invites you to participate in our 2nd Annual Fundraiser, Pedal for Prevention on Saturday, May 7, 2022 - STARKEY PARK - PAVILION B. Event T-Shirt included! This year we are so excited to partner with SWAMP Mountain Bike Club, adding a group Mountain Biking option to our annual event!!! OPTION 1: Bike, Walk, Run along the paved trail for a "FUN RIDE". Start anytime between 9 and 11 am and go at your own pace, any distance you like up to 12 miles. OPTION 2: MOUNTAIN BIKING will follow a group ride format - all starting at 9:30 am (sign in starts at 8:30am) and lasting about 2 hours, covering 12 miles of singletrack. HELMETS AND TRAIL READY BIKES REQUIRED. Riders will break up into three groups: 1. CASUAL MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDERS may be new to the sport (maybe even your first trail ride!) or might be experienced riders just seeking an easy pace to enjoy the plants and wildlife. Registration National Prevention Week National Prevention Week (NPW) is a national public education platform bringing together communities and organizations to raise awareness about the importance of substance use prevention and positive mental health. SAMHSA’s NPW is May 8 through 14, 2022, and we’ve already started planning! Check back often for new resources and send questions or requests to SAMHSA's NPW coordinator David Wilson at david.wilson@samhsa.hhs.gov. The 2022 SAMHSA Prevention Day (SPD) event will kick off National Prevention Week (May 8 – 14) activities, and it will be delivered virtually through an interactive online conference platform.

Healthy Teens Youth Health Awards 2022

Celebrate efforts to protect Youth Health in our community! Now in its 8th year, the Healthy Teens Youth Health Awards honor the individuals and organizations who do so much to protect the health of our youth and empower them to make healthier choices. We will also be celebrating our *brand new* cohort of Teen Health Educators in completing their first year on the program, as well as saying thank you and good luck to our graduating team of seniors.   Please consider donating $50 (in addition to your ticket purchase) to allow one Teen Health Educator and their parent to attend for free. Light appetizers and drinks will be served.
