Did You Know? Reflecting on our 2024 Leaders’ Luncheon to End Overdose

2024 April, Did You Know?

With a sold-out crowd of diverse leaders, the Annual Leaders’ Luncheon to End Overdose was a powerful opportunity to reflect on our achievements, celebrate our collective efforts, and galvanize our commitment to the work that lies ahead. Together, we took stock of how far we have come and renewed our dedication to making Tampa Bay a safer, healthier community.

State of the Crisis: Live Tampa Bay CEO Jennifer Webb provided a compelling update on the state of the opioid epidemic in our region, highlighting both the progress we’ve made and the challenges that remain.

The death rate slowed between 2021 and 2022 (approximately 966 lives) and decreased statewide in 2023 by ~8% (according to the CDC).  While the numbers are trending in a positive direction, there are still more people dying from overdose than from suicide, car accidents, or strokes.

Update on Live Tampa Bay’s Efforts: Nick Dewan, M.D., provided updates on efforts across 5 strategic priority areas. Beginning in Q4 of 2023, LTB began implementing these strategies in full. We have been:

Arts, Activism, and Recovery: Our keynote speakers highlighted the profound impact of art and advocacy in their lives and the transformative programs they lead. Sean Daniels, our Anti-Stigma Director, emphasized the power of the arts in reshaping national narratives. Alexis Pleus, Executive Director of Truth Pharm, discussed how advocacy can drive communities and elected officials to recognize and address pressing local issues.
