Common questions and answers

September is National Recovery Month—a time to celebrate the strength, resilience, and hope of individuals and families on their recovery journeys. It is also a time to recognize the importance of supporting employees and communities affected by mental health and substance use challenges.

This year, SAMHSA’s Recovery Month Toolkit offers a powerful way to join the movement. Packed with social media content, resources, and promotional materials, the toolkit is designed to help everyone — from our busiest neighbors to our most overextended executives — spread awareness, uplift stories of healing, and share the message that recovery is REAL—Restoring Every Aspect of Life.

By taking 30 minutes a week in September to use this highly curated toolkit, we can educate our communities, reduce stigma, and strengthen employee well-being —because recovery is REAL, and it thrives where support is strong. Let’s come together to support recovery, break stigma, and make a lasting difference.

The messaging themes for each week in Recovery Month are focused on a different aspect of recovery – or, what the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) calls, “a different dimension of recovery” — health, home, community, and purpose. These dimensions are the building blocks that all people need to live healthy, happy, independent lives and to reach their full potential. These messages offer a foundation for you to develop content that resonates with your audience.

Over the past four days you may have noticed Recovery Month messaging emphasizing the power of hope, the importance of whole-person well-being, and the critical role of treatment, recovery supports, and community connections in making recovery possible.

With the week 1 messaging on Health coming to an end, this is your opportunity to make week 2 even stronger. Use the graphics and post the ideas below to champion recovery in your workplace and show your commitment to supporting the health and resilience of your employees, your neighbors, and your community.

WEEK 2: HOME 🏠 Recovery is strengthened in a safe and supportive home.

This week highlights the vital role that safe, stable living environments play in recovery from mental health and substance use challenges. Recovery is strengthened when individuals feel secure, supported, and truly seen in their homes. A stable environment provides the foundation for healing, and when families are involved, recovery becomes a shared journey that uplifts everyone.

How Businesses Can Engage:

  • Promote Awareness in the Workplace: Share SAMHSA’s Recovery Month graphics and key messages in employee newsletters, intranet portals, and breakrooms to spark conversations about creating safe and supportive environments.

  • Host a “Safe Spaces” Workshop or Lunch & Learn: Invite the Florida Association of Recovery Residence or a local recovery residence to speak about the importance of safe, stable homes and how employees can foster supportive spaces for themselves and loved ones.

How Businesses Can Give:

  • Support Local Housing Initiatives: Partner with nonprofits that provide safe housing for individuals in recovery—through sponsorships, donations, or volunteer drives.

  • Donate Essentials: Organize a workplace collection of household items (bedding, cleaning supplies, kitchen basics) to help furnish recovery housing programs.

WEEK 3: COMMUNITY 👨🏻‍👩🏼‍🧒🏼‍👧🏻 Building social networks and a sense of community can support recovery.

This week highlights the vital role of community and belonging in the recovery journey—and workplaces are a powerful place to build that sense of connection. When employees feel seen, supported, and part of something bigger, they are more resilient and engaged. Sharing recovery stories, encouraging collaboration, and fostering a culture of inclusivity all remind your team that no one has to face challenges alone. Recovery is stronger when it’s shared, and businesses that nurture community help put the “we” in wellness.

  • Amplify Recovery Stories: Share recovery-focused content in newsletters, on bulletin boards, or social media.

  • Celebrate Togetherness: Organize a small workplace event, such as a “Wellness Circle” or “Community Coffee Break,” where staff can share positive stories, resources, and encouragement.

How Businesses Can Give:

  • Volunteer as a Team: Encourage group volunteering with recovery-focused organizations, showing employees how collective action builds community.

  • Offer Space: If possible, make your business space available for local support groups or community recovery events, strengthening local networks of connection.

WEEK 4: PURPOSE 🎯A sense of meaning can bolster recovery efforts.

This week emphasizes the power of purpose—the driving force that fuels resilience and creates lasting change. Recovery flourishes when individuals find meaning in their journey and when others walk beside them with encouragement and support. Business leaders can inspire their teams by showing that every role contributes to something meaningful and by encouraging a culture where support and shared goals matter. Purpose reminds us that joy is within reach, that no one walks this road alone, and that together we can help transform lives by building networks of connection and belonging.

As business leaders, we have the unique opportunity to create workplaces that reflect these values, offering safety, support, and a sense of belonging for our employees. By engaging, giving, and leading with compassion, we play a powerful role in breaking stigma, fostering resilience, and showing that recovery is not only possible—it happens every day. If you need to connect to any recovery organizations or additional resources – or, if you would simply like our leadership team to address your staff, we are happy to do so.
Just email us; we will prioritize helping you engage.
